Having an older brother, basketball, (and being aggressive), has been a part of my life from a very young age. In the third grade, I was introduced to organized youth basketball and joined CYO and the town rec league. This was where I learned the core fundamentals of basketball. By the fifth grade, I was a natural competitor and continued with travel CYO and AAU, and any other basketball rec league to keep me busy throughout the year. Since 7th grade, it’s been the addition of school ball where I am currently the starting point guard for my High School Varsity team.
It’s been a 12-month season of basketball for me since the third grade, and although I am a gym rat, and at times can’t imagine life off the court, I always find the time and a way to manage academics and social life. School comes first and my performance in the classroom shows it. I have high-honors with a 4.0 GPA, and I look forward to graduating from high school and going off to college to help me succeed in life. I like spending time with my family and friends who have all been supportive of me all of these years.
Of course, with the Covid-19 pandemic this year, along with everything else, getting into the gym since March has been a challenge, but I jumped at any and all opportunity that came my way. I found myself doing ZOOM workouts, outdoor playground pickup games, and scrimmages. Not exactly the type of competitive ball I’d rather be playing, but I am not ready to give this up anytime soon. I will continue to work hard, regardless of the challenges, and look forward to any opportunity to play basketball at the collegiate level.
A versatile, ball-handling guard with a high basketball IQ, that is aggressive with the ball and big on defense.
From GymRat Challenge, June 2019: 9th Grade Division First Team All-GymRat—A swing player who is adept on the perimeter. Handles the ball well. Offensively, at her best in the half-court. She can find the spacing and holes in the defense. Showed off a consistent jump shot with a nice touch and three-point range. Aggressive and will crash the boards. A solid passer. Runs the floor hard and well.
From High School Coach, Pat Mealy: Cali does an incredible job attacking the rim. She shoots behind the arc constantly, drives aggressively, and passes real effectively.
